Demmenie Klimteam: Andreas Amons

Beklimming Mt. McKinley, zomer 2008

Van 3 juni tot 4 juli gaat Andreas Amons (Demmenie klimteam) en Mike van Berkel naar Alaska om daar de mt. McKinley (ook wel Denali genoemd) te beklimmen.

Zij willen dit doen via de 2700meter hoge Cassin ridge. Dit is een beroemde route met technisch lastige passages en erg lang! De omstandigheden kunnen erg bar zijn daar de berg net onder de poolcirkel ligt. Arctische stormen geven geregeld temperaturen tot min 40º Celsius en kunnen dagen aanhouden.

Dankzij Demmenie kunnen ze goed voorbereid met goed materiaal en warme kleding deze uitdaging beginnen!



Een omschrijving van de route:
The Cassin is the quintessential technical climb of the Alaska Range. It is an elegant line that perfectly splits the enormous south face of the biggest mountain on the continent and is one of the most sought after climbs in the world. Many consider it a trade-route of the range, but judging by the actual number of ascents it has seen, it is still a modern testpiece and a lasting tribute to the visionary first ascensionists. The actual climbing is not that difficult by present technical standards. But the complete package of a long and dangerous approach, 8,000 feet of sustained climbing, high altitude, arctic cold and storms, and difficult retreat make this route a serious endeavor. The quality of the climbing is absolutely classic. Bradford Washburn wrote that the route had “unequivocally excellent climbing from start to finish.” Both the rock and the ice on this exceptional route are superb.

Op dinsdag 17 juni 2008 stond Andreas Amons (Demmenie klimteam) samen met Mike van Berkel op de top van Mount McKinley.
Amons: “Mike en ik zijn via de upper westrib naar de top geklommen en stonden met mooi weer om 17.15 uur op de top (natuurlijk met Demmenie donsjack i.v.m. met een winderige min 25ºC).
We hebben prachtig weer gehad waardoor we ook nog een mooie couloir links van de Mount Hunter konden beklimmen.”
